Change the default application for files

On a Mac - as on any other computer platform - there are several applications that can handle a certain types of files. Just think of pictures in .jpg format - Preview, iPhoto, Photoshop and many more understand and can handle them.

One question that gets asked a lot by new users is, how to change the default application for certain file types, so all files of that type are opened in a certain application.

Adjust the Desktop icons and the Finder Sidebar

You have all your stuff in your personal home folder, so why keeping the hard disk icon on the Desktop?

You don’t have a home network, so why keep the Shared area in the Finder sidebar?
Let’s get rid of all that stuff. Or let’s get it back (in case we accidently deleted something).

Quick Tip: Change the default browser

In these days of the battle for users, between the web browsers, every browser checks, if it is the default browser. The default browser is opened if you click on any web page link (e.g. in a email message).

As you go along and have multiple browser installed (e.g. Safari and Firefox), both want to be the primary choice. Here is how you set your default browser, ending the nagging. (more…)
