Selecting items in Mac OS X

A lot of actions are targeted at a set of document, pictures, music tracks, files, etc. So it’s important to know, how you can quickly select stuff.

The methods described in the following work in almost every program. No matter, if you are selecting files in Finder, picking photos in iPhoto or highlighting words and paragraphs in a word processor.

Obviously, this is not the most interesting and stunning post, but once you know these simple methods, you won’t have to think about them anymore. It’s like riding a bike.

In this post, we will, again, use the modifier keys. So please take a look at this post, if you are not sure, which keys command and shift are.

Selecting everything
To quickly select everything, that is displayed, press command-A. This will select the entire document, all files in a folder, etc.

Select a range of items
To select everything in between two items, click the starting element, then press and hold down the shift key. Finally click the last element. This also works great in a word processing program. You can select a range of words (read: a sentence or paragraph).

Select singe items
To select multiple, spread out items, hold down the command key while you click on them.

Special on text entry
Every time you enter text in Mac OS X (word processing, internet address, etc.) you can use the mouse to make life easier.

1 Single-click to position the cursor.
2 Double-click a word to highlight it.
3 Triple-click a word to highlight the sentence, the word is in.

Use these basic methods on a couple of occasions and you’ll get so used to them, you don’t need to think any longer. Like riding a bike.
