Quick tip: Access application functions from the Dock

We already had a post on the Dock and how you can use it to see what’s going on. We also used the contextual menu of the Dock icons a bit.

But there is more to the icons in the Dock, as it might seem. When an application is running, try control-clicking its icon. This will reveal a set of basic commands for this application.

Let’s look at Safari’s contextual menu:

For Safari the choice is not big, you see all currently open windows and the command to create a new one.

However, the set of commands is different from application to application. Look at the iTunes menu:

This is just another nice example, how Mac OS X makes life a little bit easier and a little more convenient.

Hint: You can control iTunes without making it the the active application, so quickly pause, skip or set a rating right from the Dock.
