Web Clips - Create your own widgets

Not too long ago, we were checking out Dashboard and were exploring widgets. Leopard introduces a cool, new feature called Web Clips. It allows you to create your own widgets from any content on the web.

You can use this to monitor the content of websites, that change often. For example news sites, results of sport games, “Tip of the Day”-sections and what not. All from your Dashboard.

Let’s say, you would like to see all the latest posts of your favorite website (i.e. www.mackindergarten.com).

First, open up the webpage.

Locate and click the scissors icon in Safari’s toolbar.

Now the screen dims and as you move your mouse over the parts of the website, they get highlighted. Move your mouse over the Recent Posts and click it.

This brings up handles around the edge. Drag those spots around to adjust the area you wish to have on your Dashboard.

Notice the purple bar, that appeared at the top of the site, Click Add to add the selected part of the website to your Dashboard.

Now, Dashboard opens up and the part of the website, you just selected is displayed as a widget. You can add a frame to the widget, through accessing its backside, by clicking on the little “i”-icon in the lower right corner.

Add as many widgets you want (and have screen space for).

We at Mac Kindergarten always like to see, how people use features of Mac OS X. Tell us in the comments, how you use Web Clips.

Remove a widget

It’s easy to create these widgets and it’s easy to remove them again. Please take a look at this post to see, how you can quickly remove a widget from the Dashboard.
